Fire Safety For Timber Frame Constructions
Timber frame constructions come with a series of specific fire safety concern and can be more difficult to protect from fire due to their inherent flammable nature.
Fire Safety For Timber Frame Constructions
The key starting point for any timber frame construction is a fire safety assessment by a competent person. That will identify any specific risk from fire and suggest any remedial action that can be taken to mitigate or remove the risk to people. You are required by law to undertake a fire risk assessment if you employ five or more people at the premises.
What is a fire risk assessment?
A fire risk assessment takes a methodical look at the premises, the activities that you perform and the likelihood of fire causing harm to those in and around the area.
The aims of a fire risk assessment are:
- to identify fire hazards;
- to reduce the risk of the hazards you found causing people harm to as low as is reasonably practicable; and
- to decide what additional physical fire precautions and management policies are needed to ensure the safety of people in your building if a fire does occur.
Arson Risk Assessments
There are some relatively straightforward measures you can take to dramatically reduce the chances of an arson attack to a timber structure. Arson risk reduction includes everyone who lives or works in a building or a building’s grounds. Arson risk assessments should for part of your normal fire risk assessment process under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. The 2005 Fire Safety Order sets out the responsibilities for all premises when it comes to fire safety – except for private dwellings inhabited by a single-family. It requires you to nominate a ‘responsible person’ to do your fire risk assessments and take any required actions.
