The Millennium wireless fire alarm system, manufactured by Electro Detectors, superseded the successful A-Series fire alarm system. It was launched in 1997 with a much improved high speed, fault tolerant network and soon became a world leader in radio systems.

Along with its sophisticated test modes, complex cause and effect, simple setup and long sensor battery life, it provided the largest capacity in radio systems allowing it to be used in some large landmark sites such as Sandhurst College.

Electro Detectors Wireless Fire Alarm Systems

The Millennium wireless fire alarm system was Electro Detectors first addressable wireless fire alarm system. The Millennium system was much more advanced than its predecessor, offering a fully addressable system, with a much more enhanced processor. This enhancement in processing power allowed the system designers to increase the number of devices it could manage by up to three times.

The Millennium Series had two systems available, the M100 and the M200. The M100 was the larger of the two systems and was capable of handling 3000 devices across 100 zones, whereas the M200 was the smaller panel and could communicate with 999 devices across 20 zones.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Millennium Wireless Fire Alarm Systems

Since 2011 the Millennium system could not be used for new installations and is only supported by Electro Detectors approved distributors such as ourselves at RV Fire Systems. In 2021 the manufacturer EDA will completely stop supporting the Millenium system and is now recommending upgrading to the Zerio Plus range which is EN54 part 25 (EN54-25) compliant.

As a manufacturer, EDA was not permitted to place any items into the fire safety marketplace, which are not third-party certified to the new regulations. The official advice that has been given to fire alarm system installers such as ourselves at RV Fire Systems is that any extensions to existing Millennium or Zerio systems must be done using the new fully compliant equipment linked to the original system. The Zerio Plus is a direct replacement for the non-compliant Millennium and Zerio systems. When the new EN54 part 25 standard became mandatory, the frequency EDA systems were using had to be changed; therefore, it was necessary for them to design a new model range.

If you are replacing an existing fire alarm system, the base plates of the new Zerio Plus system are compatible with the older models and therefore do not require replacing. The new devices simply plug into the existing bases mounted on the ceilings. The fire alarm panel network will require resurveying and upgrading in order to meet the new frequency requirements of the system. The FIA (Fire Industry Association) has announced that where existing devices need to be replaced that are not compliant with the EN54 part 25 legislation, then it is acceptable to replace these devices provided that they are ‘like for like’ replacements, i.e. the new devices must function to the exact same specifications of the units being replaced.

It is also important to note that, EDA will continue to supply spares and maintain existing systems for ten years from the date the new EN54 part 25 standards were implemented. EDA shall, therefore, continue to produce spares for both the Millennium and Zerio systems until 31st March 2021 after which time support will cease. EDA will continue to supply batteries for both systems for a further five years, i.e. March 31st 2026.
