The Millennium range was a series of wireless fire alarm systems manufactured by Electro Detectors. The Manchester Millennium wireless fire alarm system superseded the older A-Series in 1997 and gave improved speed and a better network. It soon became one of the world leaders in wireless fire alarms.
Along with a series of sophisticated test modes, a simple setup and a long sensor battery life, it offered the biggest capacity on the market so it was installed in some large and prominent sites, including the prestigious Sandhurst College.
Electro Detectors Wireless Fire Alarm Systems
The Millennium system was Electro Detectors’ first addressable wireless fire alarm system. It was significantly more advanced than the model it replaced, being fully addressable with an improved processor. This faster processor allowed the designers to treble the number of devices it could support.
The Millennium Series came in two variants, M100 and M200. The larger system, M100 was capable of handling up to 3,000 devices across 100 detection zones, whereas the cut-down M200 could still interface with 999 devices in twenty different zones.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Millennium Wireless Fire Alarm Systems
Since 2011, the Millennium system has not been available for use in new installations. It is now only supported by a few approved Electro Detectors distributors (like RV Fire Systems). In 2021, the manufacturer is going to stop supporting the Millennium system and so they recommend upgrading to their new Zerio Plus range, which is EN54 part 25 (EN54-25) compliant.
EDA cannot manufacture new items for the fire safety marketplace without a third-party certifying them to meet the new regulations. The advice for fire alarm system installers like RV Fire Systems Manchester is that extensions to Millennium or Zerio systems must be done with fully compliant equipment. The Zerio Plus range is a direct replacement for the Millennium and Zerio systems, but was needed because when the EN54 part 25 standards came into force, the radio frequency had to be changed; so a whole new range had to be designed and made.
It is worth noting that so long you are only directly replacing existing fire alarm system components, this can be done relatively painlessly. This is because the base plates required by the new Zerio Plus system are identical to the older ones so new devices can be plugged straight into the bases that are already installed on your ceilings. The fire alarm panel network still has to be resurveyed and upgraded, of course, to comply with the new frequency requirements, but the amount of work is less than an entirely new installation. The Fire Industry Association has announced that if existing devices are being replaced, and they are not compliant with EN54 part 25, it is fine to do so as long as the installer uses ‘like for like’ replacements which function in exactly the same way as the older ones.
EDA will still be able to supply spare parts and maintain existing Manchester Millennium wireless fire alarm systems for a minimum of ten years from the EN54 part 25 standards coming in. What this means practically is that EDA will continue to make spares for the Millennium and Zerio systems until at least 31st of March 2021 but then support will cease and parts will be hard to come by. EDA will carry on supplying spare batteries for both the wireless systems for a further five years after that, till March 31st 2026.
