Blackpool Millennium Wireless Fire Alarm Systems

The Millennium was a wireless fire alarm system manufactured by Electro Detectors. In 1997, the Blackpool Millennium wireless fire alarm system superseded the A-Series fire alarm and offered a much-improved speed and a more fault tolerant wireless network. It soon became a world leader in wireless radio fire alarms.

In addition to a series of sophisticated test modes, a simple setup procedure and long sensor battery life, it offered the largest capacity in wireless fire alarm systems. This led to it being used in some landmark sites, such as Sandhurst College.

Electro Detectors Wireless Fire Alarm Systems

 

The Millennium system was the first addressable wireless fire alarm system by Electro Detectors. The Millennium system was a lot more advanced than its predecessor, with an enhanced processor. This increased power allowed the system’s designers to increase the number of wireless devices it supported by three times.

The Millennium Series was available in two configurations, the M100 and the M200. The larger, the M100 could handle some 3,000 devices across a hundred detection zones, whereas the smaller M200 could interface with 999 devices across twenty zones.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Millennium Wireless Fire Alarm Systems

Since 2011, it has no longer been possible to use Millennium systems in new installations. It is now only supported by Electro Detectors approved distributors such as use (RV Fire Systems Blackpool). In 2021, the manufacturer will stop support completely for the Millennium system. They now recommend you upgrade to their Zerio Plus range, a new EN54 part 25 (EN54-25) compliant product.

EDA cannot manufacture new items and put them onto the fire safety marketplace unless they are certified to the new regulations by a third party. The official advice to fire alarm system installers is that any extensions to legacy Millennium or newer Zerio systems have to be done with new fully compliant equipment, although the new kit can still be linked to the original system. The Zerio Plus range works as a drop-in replacement for the older, Millennium and Zerio systems. The reason for the change is that when the new EN54 part 25 standard became law, the frequency that EDA systems were using had to be changed; so it was necessary to produce a whole new range of equipment.

It is worth noting that if you are just replacing elements of an existing fire alarm system, it is relatively straightforward for the installer as the base plates of the new Zerio Plus system are fully compatible with the other models. The new devices can be plugged into the existing bases mounted on your ceilings. The fire alarm panel and network will have to be resurveyed and upgraded to meet the new frequency requirements. The Fire Industry Association (FIA) has announced that should existing devices not be compliant with the EN54 part 25 legislation,  it is acceptable to replace them so long as you use ‘like for like’ replacements: any new devices must be functionally identical and meet the same specifications as the units that are being replaced.

Please note that EDA will carry on supplying spares and maintaining existing Millennium systems for at least ten years from the date of the new EN54 part 25 standards coming into force. EDA will, therefore, continue to make spare parts for both Millennium and Zerio systems until 31st of March 2021 when support will cease. EDA will continue to supply spare batteries for both systems for a further five years, until March 31st 2026.
