Taxi Fire Extinguishers
There is no law requiring people to keep a car fire extinguisher in domestic vehicles in the UK. For taxis and minibuses, there are regulations to follow, and these can vary in different areas according to the local licensing authority. Generally, the best way to protect your taxi or minicab is with an ABC dry powder extinguisher. In a minibus capable of carrying nine or more passengers, it is mandatory to carry a fire extinguisher, such as a 2-litre AFFF Foam extinguisher. Make sure it is mounted securely so it can’t roll around and get damaged.
Where to Put the Taxi Fire Extinguisher
There are few hard and fast rules for securing a fire extinguisher to a vehicle. You have to make sure it is installed using the transport unit, it cannot be affected by the weather and it has to be easy to access. You might want to place it in the driver compartment, or in the boot for a taxi or minicab. Generally, it’s best to place your taxi fire extinguisher in a place where you have to leave the vehicle to reach it, such as the boot. That way you are not tempted to sit in the car and extinguish a fire. It is safer to evacuate the vehicle before trying to tackle a fire. If your efforts do not work, you’re already safe and not sitting in a burning car!
