Nottingham Man Jailed For Fire Safety Offences At Hotel

On Monday 26th November, a Nottingham man was handed a sentence of six months imprisonment and a fine of almost £20,000 after he pleaded guilty to five fire safety offences at the Sherwood Hotel he owned.

Nottingham man jailed for fire safety offences at hotel

The man, Mahmood Hussain, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing after being charged with breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The breaches included failing to comply with an Enforcement Notice at his business premises – the A1 Hotel, on Hamilton Road in Sherwood. Other offences he admitted included failing to undertake a suitable fire risk assessment, failure to maintain adequate escape routes from the hotel, failure to make the appropriate fire safety arrangements and the failure to maintain the hotel’s fire alarm and emergency lighting system.

Comments from Judge and Fire Brigade

As he passed sentence, the presiding judge, His Honour Judge MacAdam, described Mr Hussain as having shown a willful disregard for the laws around fire safety and criticised him for continuing to profit while his hotel’s residents were at risk. He explained that an immediate custodial sentence was required so that “The message must go out – fire kills,” and because of Mr Hussain’s failure to respond to “so many warnings on so many occasions.”

Andy Kelly, the Head of Fire Protection at Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We welcome and support the comments of the Judge. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service will always work with and support business owners, so they can keep their premises, employees and guests safe. A custodial sentence, such as this, confirms to the public that we take fire safety matters seriously and we are committed to creating a safer community for us all to enjoy.”
